These Churro sheep, being a primitive “Old Type”, possess a number of non-visible traits that have allowed them to not only survive but thrive in the exceedingly harsh desert climate- something that would be impossible for modern commercial sheep. We value the Churro sheep for things like disease resistance, adaptation to marginal food sources, agile movement through the arid desert terrain, and the ability to travel long distances without water. These traits used to be common before the 1800’s but are very hard to find now.

Our flock

Our Churro sheep flock provides us with meat to eat and ample quality wool for a variety of projects. As a family, we handpicked each animal in our small flock of Churro sheep for their fleece quality and specific primitive type. We are grateful to our dear friends, Dennis and Deb Moroney from The 47 Ranch who made this project possible. We wanted the best and to insure the strictest biosecurity measures before bringing the flock onto our farm property. We’ve completed two consecutive years of biosecurity screening on our foundation five ewes and one ram through Washington State University, with all results coming back negative.
